CSA asks Manufacturers: Think About Limited Time, Discounted Certification Programs!Recently the dominant US certification agency announced its intention to offer a ‘two-for-one, fast-track’ certification program for three specified industry areas. While special deals are a terrific way to generate business in the retail trade, manufacturers and those involved with product safety should consider this offer carefully. CSA asks, do these offers really benefit manufacturers or just promote duplicate costs and cause further delays for product going to market?

Think about it.

The other agency says it will now provide free certification for a limited time in a restricted number of product areas for Canada when you certify your product with them to US standards.

Nothing new here for CSA customers. For years, CSA has offered one low price for combined certification for Canada and the US - in any product area or sector.

Think about it.

The other agency says that its “quickie” Certification for products ‘pre-certified’ by CSA will be provided at 50% less than current price and within half its normal delivery time.

Again, nothing new here for CSA customers. CSA is the only mark you need for the US and Canada. For several years, CSA has provided certification for the US and Canada at one fixed low price on pre-certified products. And, we ask, why pay anything more?

Think about it.

The other agency boldly states it will now accept CSA certified components. But, at a price to manufacturers - - 50% of its usual price on components that CSA has already certified and only in those restricted product categories.

Again nothing new here for CSA customers. In fact, the other agency’s offer doesn’t come close to matching the practice CSA started in 1994 of accepting UL certified components within end-use products CSA certifies at no extra cost. A practice we and industry have asked the other agency to reciprocate for the benefit of all customers. The response - - customers must pay for component certification and pay for additional ongoing factory inspections to receive certification on components already certified by CSA. And, all of this duplicate work so the other agency can certify the end-use product.

We ask, who benefits from going through the certification process two times and paying twice for certification? Not you.

Think about it.

CSA International is committed to an open and competitive marketplace in which manufacturers should have the right to choose a certification organization, without artificial barriers that influence that free choice.

CSA’s past and current practice is to meet customer deadlines; offer one fixed low price for Canadian and US certification marks; and, accept approved components without retesting. We listen to manufacturers and work with them on issues like harmonization of standards, the need for responsive service, and mutual component acceptance. CSA does this every day, without fanfare, not just for selected time periods and not just on a limited range of products.

We believe in working with our customers to help build their business - not reducing their bottom line for our benefit without adding any real value.

Think about it.

As a manufacturer, what will the future hold when this “Fast Track” offer is over?

Think about it. Think about CSA. Think about your choice.
